    Slimserver & itouch

After some trials and decision making I've decided to use the slimserver with squeezebox duets, for my whole house audio.

It offers many benefits over other systems in terms of it's open source an established array of plugs and cli / url support. I was wondering if any one else in the brick community is using squeezeboxes and controlling via webgateway etc?

The endpoint players have l/r channels and digital audio and I intend to place one in most rooms which can then merge into the amp for the room.

With 2.0 from apply now out there is very likely to be an app out soon to control them also, so the itouch is fast becoming  my choice of control panel also. Just need to somehome improve the web interface speed or write my own app for the webbrick? Anyone already down that path?

I'm using Slimserver with the IPeng add-on for the IPhone / ITouch - I guess that there will be a dedicated app at some point it works well at the moment. The Slimserver web interface is good enough on the new version to control on my 15" fixed point touch screen, but can be a little tempremental.

I'm also using SoftSqueeze (software emulation of their hardware) in rooms where there is a PC and speakers.

Question for me is if there is an app for web bricks.

     Hi Paul,

I've tried (and continue) to use iPeng on the itouch/iphone, there is talk of them going native which is pretty essential as in my book the web verison is too slow to be wife proof, I know she would get fed up waiting for the pages to load.

as there is a decent api, it should be very easy to drive from the brick/gateway and to me it looks much more flexible than the locked down itunes route.

Hi Ian, Could you let me know how many duets you have running and how the iPeng is working with them, as I'm looking at the Duets myself to handle the audio distribution. Thanks Paul PS have you seen the airremote (although you have to buy a new ipod) PPS did you find any cheap sources for the duets ?

     Hi Paul,

I only have one duet at the moment for trial, but it has been enough for me to select them/slimserver as the music distruibution choice. the duet controller works well as is pretty wife-proof, base station is a little expensive but again works well. The limit to the number you can have on the network will only really be limited to the speed of the server that you put the slimserver on - which can obviously be scaled.

In regards to ipeng - interface is pretty BUT it is webbased talking as a html pluggin to slimserver and as far as I'm concerned too slow. I have to assume that when they finally write a native app this will solve the problem since the raw web packet management of the itouch is very effecient as can be demostrated easily when using it to control a webbrick directly (0 visible latency)

Have indeed seen airremote and registered with them when they annonced, anyone's guess (unless I've missed something) when it will actually be on the shelves and I'm hoepfull that the webbrick team are talking to the developers for integration as it should be a good link.
You don't have to buy a new itouch - it works as long as you upgrade to V2 firmware

Duets I would still be looking (as I did before) to source from the US when I travel there, although with the £ in free fall it may soon become a different story.

As of today itouch is still my favoured channel for room touchpoints, cost and speed are great (have to assume that the bugs, which apple have loads of, will be fixed, and native apps will appear) - there is also loads of rumours about a new lower cost range coming soon

    hope this helps

    Thanks for the reply Ian,

I'll look to get a duet in the next month or so.

I guess we'll see on the 9th of Sep about any new 'cheap' apple products :-)
